Short Film with Big Impact Signs, by Patrick Hughes

by Matthew Codd on Nov.22, 2009, under ,

This short film is a few years old now, and may have done its round about the intertubes, but I've just watched it again and NEED to share it in case anyone out there has missed it.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that this is one of the best film's I've ever seen. Not just short films; but any film, feature or otherwise, of any length, and any budget. Signs is up among the best.

It tells the simple story of a lonely guy working in a menial office job, who is basically tired of his stagnant life. Until he "meets" a very attractive women working in a neighboring office building, and they start communicating by writing messages on paper to show to each other through the window.

There's almost no dialogue, and the whole story is progressed by the actions and signs of the characters, which leaves a lot of room for the brilliant score (by Dmitri Golovko) to weave its magic.

All of this compounds into an incredibly moving 12 minutes and 13 seconds, and evokes emotion like few films mever manage to; from the very depressing (and unsettlingly real) start, through a warm and humourus middle, and culminating in a beautiful and inspiring end.

I get shivers through my whole body every time I watch. Enjoy.
